Corey Ribotsky and Barclay Hedge
Filed under Corey Ribotsky, NIR GroupFeb 24According to the CEO (and founder) of Barclay Hedge Sol Waksman, European and American equity funds have “continued to rally for a fifth consecutive month.” Indeed, a staggering 14 (out of 18) of Barclay’s hedge fund indices increased in January 2011 and the Barclay Fund of Funds Index gained 0.27 percent during the same time frame. As well, there is evidence that the general macro-economic situation is improving. Waksman added, “in developing nations where prices for energy and food make up a larger percentage of monthly expenditures, inflation concerns negatively impacted equity markets.”
Under the leadership of Corey Ribotsky, Barclay Hedge named N.I.R. a “top hedge fund” in America between 2006-07 when N.I.R. achieved an unparalleled 12-month compound annual return of 20.68%.

Head of the NIR Group, Corey Ribotsky is no stranger to investing in small companies or those that are encountering problems. The company is very focused on “extensive risk management” to ensure the best results for their clients. But what does risk management actually mean and how do companies put this theory into practice?
When a company like the NIR Group works with clients utilizing this theory it has to first undertake a thorough analysis of the risk involved and thereafter work out how to apply its available resources to limit (or maybe even – at best case scenario – totally eliminate) unwanted events. Or – in a more positive vein – risk management can be used for the good, to maximize potential opportunities in business.
There are various different risk management strategies including the most obvious one, avoiding the risk completely. But since there are different levels, a company may choose to select different strategies at different times or for different companies’ needs. One can try to move the risk to a different party or limit the negative effect that the risk might have.

In recent years the world economy has been in crisis, and for hedge funds the financial markets have been especially stressful. But according to an article which appeared in Barron’s, the prestigious journal of financial news, Corey Ribotsky’s N.I.R. Group passed this international stress test with flying colors. The Barron’s article explains that investments in hedge funds reached a high value of $1.9 trillion, but by the end of 2008 were valued overall at $1.4 trillion, dropping to about $1 trillion by the middle of 2009.
Yet despite these distressing statistics some members of the 2009 Barron’s Hedge Fund 100 got through the crisis in surprisingly good shape. As Barron’s put it, despite the bad financial environment “…the accomplishments of members of this year’s Barron’s Hedge Fund 100 are all the more impressive. Unlike the mutual-fund arena, there actually were many hedge funds that posted double-digit gains in 2008, giving them a stellar three-year performance.”
According to the Barron’s list of top 100 hedge funds for 2008, AJW Offshore II, one of Corey Ribotsky’s N.I.R. Group funds, ranked 48th, with double-digit returns for both the one year and three-year annualized returns. Certainly an outstanding performance during a difficult financial climate.

Certainly a must-read from the Intelligent Investor about the proposed cap on 12(b)1 fees. As the article explains, “The SEC proposal—called, naturally, Rule 12(b)2—tries to tackle these problems by making commissions negotiable and by capping the distribution fees a fund can charge an investor over time. The new rule would likely take effect in 2011, after the agency considers comments from the public. ”
This will likely have an influence on fund investors and managers like Corey Ribotsky of the NIR Group and so many like him – it’s certainly worthwhile to explore these issues and to keep up on the latest news as it evolves.

Founder and Managing Member of the N.I.R. Group, Corey Ribotsky, was featured a few years back in the July 2008 issue of Entrepreneur Magazine. The article focused on the use of PIPES (private investment in public equities). Ribotsky stressed that due diligence is essential in considering such deals.
As Ribotsky said in the article, “The company has to know who they’re getting into bed with. You want someone who’s going to be a financial partner as opposed to someone who’s just looking for a trading play.”
Corey Ribotsky has over a decade of experience structuring transactions for his investors. He is often sought after as an expert on direct investments in public companies for industry conferences and symposia.
