Corey Ribotsky is involved in various charitable organizations. One of these is the Onyx and Breezy Foundation, which was set up seven years ago, as a way of paying tribute to the memory of Mark and Wanda Shefts’ two Labrador retrievers. The foundation seeks to “assist animals in a variety of ways,” and has been successfully doing this since its inception.
Upcoming at the foundation there are a few interesting events. Next Sunday and Monday for example, is the Bellmore Family Street Festival, which will take place in Bellmore, NY, from 11am ‘til 6pm. If you can’t make that, check out the Eleventh Hour Rescue Pubtoberfest on September 24th, which will take place in Rockaway, New Jersey from 11am ‘til 5pm. The following day the Nyack Septemberfest is scheduled from 10 am ‘til 5pm.
Keep checking back at www.onyxandbreezy.org/upcoming_events.html for more information on how you can be a part of this worthy organization.

Corey Ribotsky on Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness
Filed under Corey Ribotsky, Leukemia & Lymphoma SocietySep 5Get ready for this month’s important awareness month for leukemia and lymphoma. September is the annual month marking leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma awareness. There have been significant strides in the treatment of patients with blood cancers in the last few years. Much of this work has been supported by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) where Corey Ribotsky volunteers. The organization was founded in 1949.
According to survivor Nikki Henshaw, the work of the LLS is only to be commended. She stated quite clearly, “I have personally seen the progress in cure rates and treatments from when I experienced leukemia in 1994.These changes have dramatically improved the quality of life for those who are battling cancer.”
Indeed, the statistics speak for themselves. In the last four decades, there has been an 87 percent increase in the survival rate of children who contract acute lymphocytic leukemia, from 3 percent to 90 percent. As well, since the 1960s, there has been a doubling in the survival rate of Hodgkin lymphoma patient survival.
Still there is much work to be done and the LLS requires substantial finances and volunteers to keep up with its good work.

As a volunteer at Sunrise Day Camp, Corey Ribotsky is someone who would no doubt be thrilled at the quality of staff members there. For example, the current director of hospital and community relations, Bonnie Flatow, is also a medical technologist who works at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She has three children and began as a volunteer – like Ribotsky – at the Sunrise Day Camp to help the organization “guide through the maze of hospitals and medical issues.”
For two years, Flatow was Sunrise Day Camp’s chairperson where she set up the advisory board, putting together new programming including Sunshine from Sunrise. Today she is “pioneering the brand new position of Director of Hospital and Community Relations.”
In addition to these roles, she is the hospital liaison officer to 11 hospitals that are involved with Sunrise, while “reaching out to new medical and respite institutions to form new affiliations.” She also sets up the children’s hospital visits and works directly with their parents. Flatow is currently coordinating the Sunrise on Wheels project.
Out of everything she does, it seems that Bonnie is “best known for her warm smile, her engaging personality, and the genuine love and caring that she brings to each and every child whom she meets.”

This year, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2011 Man & Woman of the Year campaign raised more money that it ever has in the 21 year history of the program. The campaign offers people the title of 2011 Man of the Year and 2011 Woman of the Year for the people who raise the most money in a ten week time period for the LLS. Certainly, fundraisers of this sort and donors like Corey Ribotsky enable the LLS to continue their important cancer research work.
This year’s campaign raised $14.5 million, which is $2.7 million more than the high reached last year. 650 candidates competed to raise the most money. The winners were New York City classic rock DJ Ian O’Malley and Kelley LaFontaine of LaFontaine Automotive Group in Highland, Michigan.
